Real Questions We Hear From Patients On

Neck, Shoulder & Arm Pain / Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

1.Could my arm and shoulder pain be coming from a nerve?

Yes. The nerves that travel from the neck into the arm control sensation and movement. If one of those nerves becomes compressed or irritated, it can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand.

2.What is thoracic outlet syndrome?

Thoracic outlet syndrome occurs when nerves or blood vessels are compressed in a narrow space between the neck and shoulder. This pressure can lead to arm pain, numbness, heaviness, or weakness — especially when the arm is lifted.

3.Why does my arm go numb when I raise it?

Raising the arm can temporarily narrow the space around the nerves near the shoulder. If those nerves are already compressed, lifting the arm may worsen the pressure and cause numbness or tingling.

4.Is my pain coming from my neck, shoulder, or nerves?

Pain in this area can come from muscles, joints, discs, or nerves. One of the most important parts of evaluation is determining which structure is actually causing the symptoms.

5.When is nerve surgery worth considering?

Surgery is usually considered after conservative treatments such as therapy, medications, or injections have not provided relief and a specific nerve compression has been identified.

The right diagnosis changes everything. If you’re still searching for answers, the team at Neuropax is here to help.

Still wondering what might be causing your pain?

Many patients who come to Neuropax have already seen multiple doctors and tried several treatments without success. In some cases, persistent pain may be coming from an irritated or compressed peripheral nerve that hasn’t been identified yet.

If you’re still searching for answers, a peripheral nerve evaluation may help uncover the source of your pain.
