Dr. Robert R. Hagan is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with more than 25 years of surgical experience and specialized expertise in peripheral nerve surgery.

Peripheral nerve surgery is a highly specialized area of surgical practice rather than a separate board-certified medical specialty. Dr. Hagan’s expertise is built upon his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery craniofacial surgery, and peripheral nerve surgery, combined with extensive clinical experience evaluating and treating complex peripheral nerve injuries and nerve-related pain.

An early adopter of peripheral nerve surgery, Dr. Hagan has helped advance surgical approaches to peripheral nerve conditions throughout the body. He is internationally recognized for his work in peripheral nerve surgery and is a thought leader in headache, occipital neuralgia and thoracic outlet surgery.

Education & Advanced Surgical Training

Dr. Hagan received his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

He completed general surgery training at the Lahey Clinic in Boston and plastic surgery training through the Lahey Clinic and Harvard Medical School hospitals. He continued his advanced surgical education with a Harvard Medical School fellowship specializing in hand surgery and microsurgery.

After returning to St. Louis, Dr. Hagan completed an additional craniofacial fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.

His multidisciplinary surgical training provides a broad foundation for evaluating complex peripheral nerve disorders that may cross traditional anatomical specialties.

Research & Leadership

Dr. Hagan is committed to advancing the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral nerve disorders through clinical research, education and development of surgical techniques.

He has authored or contributed to more than 70 scientific journal articles and 10 book chapters, with research addressing peripheral nerve injury, neuroma, headache surgery, occipital nerve disorders, thoracic outlet syndrome and other complex nerve conditions.
