Part of the “When Pain Doesn’t Make Sense” Series
When pain doesn’t follow the expected path, it leads to confusion, frustration, and unanswered questions. This series explores the patterns we see every day: when imaging looks normal, treatments don’t last, and recovery timelines don’t make sense. Each piece is designed to help patients and providers better understand what might be getting missed, and why identifying the right source of pain can change everything.
One of the most important things to understand is that chronic pain without a clear answer does not mean there isn’t a reason. It often means that the right explanation hasn’t been found yet. You’re not crazy. And you’re not alone. Sometimes we just haven’t found the right explanation yet. The right diagnosis changes everything.
WE GET IT! You’ve gone through the appointments. You’ve had the imaging. You’ve tried the treatments. And still, no one has been able to give you a clear answer for why you’re in pain. This is one of the most difficult and isolating experiences for patients, because over time, the lack of answers can start to feel just as overwhelming as the pain itself. You may have been told that everything looks normal, that it will get better with time, or that there isn’t a clear cause. And after hearing that enough times, it’s natural to start wondering if the problem is even something that can be solved.
Many of the patients we see at Neuropax Clinic have spent months or even years searching for that explanation. They’ve done everything they were asked to do, and when the results don’t match the effort, it can be incredibly discouraging. We’ve seen patients who were told their pain didn’t make sense, only to later discover that a peripheral nerve was the source all along.
One patient we treated had been living with severe pain for years after about of shingles. She couldn’t lift her arm, hug her family, or even stand comfortably under a shower because of how sensitive the area had become. For a long time, there was no clear path forward.
But once the source of her pain was properly identified and treated, everything changed. She was able to return to the things she loved and regain a sense of normalcy that had felt out of reach for years. Stories like this are not as rare as people might think. Peripheral nerve issues are often overlooked because they don’t always show up clearly on standard imaging and can be difficult to diagnose without a focused evaluation. The pain can be very real, very specific, and very persistent, even when tests appear normal. That disconnect between what is felt and what is seen is where many patients get stuck.
Most of the patients we see have already tried multiple approaches before they come to us. They’ve followed the recommended path, and when it doesn’t lead to answers, they’re left feeling like they’ve reached the end of the road. But in many cases, there is still another layer to explore. The pattern of the pain, the history of how it started, and the way it behaves over time can all provide important clues.
At Neuropax, we focus on listening carefully to those details and evaluating whether a peripheral nerve could be contributing to the symptoms. Through a combination of clinical evaluation and, when appropriate, diagnostic nerve blocks, we work to identify the true source of the pain.
For many of our patients, this is the first time their experience has been fully understood and connected to a specific diagnosis. If you’ve been living with chronic pain and no clear answer, it doesn’t mean there isn’t one. It may mean that the next step is looking in a different direction. Remember, you are in pain…you’re not crazy and you’re not alone. Sometimes we just haven’t found the right explanation yet. The right diagnosis changes everything. If you’re still searching for answers, the doctors at Neuropax Clinic are here to help.
